Making Hair Bow
Making Hair Bows is an easy, fun and inexpensive way to decorate your hair. If you make your own hair bows then you can use colors to match your outfits. Children’s bow can look really cute and bright neon colors can be used.
There are many variations to the bows which can be made for your hair. One of the most popular is probably the Tailored or Dior bow. It has simple lines and is not over flamboyant but chic and tasteful, especially for older people; however it looks equally good on young people and is often used as a neat way to tidy hair.
Tailored bows can be made from four pieces of ribbon cut into 12inch, 11inch, 9 inch and 3 inch lengths. Begin by taking the 12 inch piece and making it into a circle and pinching it together in the centre to make the shape of a bow. Find the centre of the 11 and 9 inch pieces and use them to make the tails, wire these to the bow shape, use the 3 inch ribbon to cover the wire. Trim the ends of the bow tails into v shapes at their ends.
A simpler way to make Dior bows is to fold a length of ribbon back on itself and making each loop smaller than the previous one. Tack or staple the centers together and then use another piece of ribbon either in the same color or a complementary color and secure behind to form the tails. Use another piece of ribbon to cover the centre and hey presto done!
Collar bows can be made by forming a length of ribbon into a circle, crossing the ends over in front, simply pinch together to form a bow shape and pull the tails through to the size required; collar bows can also be made with no tails at all. These tailless Collar bows are often used to hold top buns neatly in place and look professional and more ‘adult’ than bows with long tails.
